Back to Blue

Back to Blue
This body of large, experimental cyanotype prints interprets aspects of the Myth of Persephone, the Greek child-goddess who disappears and returns.

Mythology is an art form that reflects what is timeless in human existence. Every myth is transformational ritual and has many readings.

This story dates back to the Neolithic Age (8000-4000 BCE), the beginning of agriculture. It is a story of rite of passage and a metaphor for the cycles of the year.

An otherworldly place is suggested by the use of blue cyanotype, creating a dreamlike in-between space, not observed reality.

Blue is a phenomenon of the atmosphere. It draws you in. It suggests infinity.

Cyanotype, a deceptively simple contact print process, the first photographic process, is essentially drawing with light. I use a variety of papers, vintage glass photographic plates, freshly picked leaves, flowers and stems, textiles and collage to construct images, layering to achieve tonal variation. Paper choice is  vitally important. Managing large, wet sheets of coated, sensitised paper requires careful handling.

Blue, spontaneous and fragile,

so widespread that I may draw deep from the well of illusions

and accept that I am

beside a lake or a field of

blue flax in flower…
